BETHLEHEM, Pa., November 18, 1997 -- The election, effective January 1, 1998, of Dr. Augustine E. Moffitt, Jr. to senior vice president and chief administrative officer, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, was announced today by Curtis H. Barnette, chairman and chief executive officer.
Dr. Moffitt currently serves as vice president of safety, health and environment. He is succeeding John A. Jordan, Jr. whose retirement, effective December 31, has been announced.
In his new capacity, Dr. Moffitt will be responsible for all environmental, safety and health activities as well as the corporate human resources, compensation and benefit services, and building operations and services functions. He will also serve on Bethlehem Steel's executive office staff.
A native of Minersville, Pa., Dr. Moffitt received a bachelor of science degree, cum laude, in chemistry in 1967 from LaSalle College and received a master of science degree in 1969 and a doctor of science degree in 1973, both from Harvard University. He is a 1996 graduate of the Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program.
Before joining Bethlehem in 1973, Dr. Moffitt worked with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health at its Cincinnati, Ohio, office and previously served as a commissioned officer in the U. S. Public Health Service.
His initial assignment with Bethlehem was as senior environmental chemist and toxicologist. In 1980, he was promoted to manager of environmental health and three years later was named manager, occupational health and safety.
In 1984, he was transferred from the corporate offices to the Bethlehem Structural Products Division as manager of human resources with responsibility for a broad range of personnel and employment matters, union relations, environmental safety and health, industrial engineering, salary administration, human resources planning and development, and employee services.
Dr. Moffitt was elected vice president, safety, health and environment for Bethlehem Steel, effective March 1, 1994.
Professionally, Dr. Moffitt is chairman of the environmental affairs committee of the International Iron and Steel Institute and a member of the environmental management council of the Manufacturers Alliance. He is also a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute.
Dr. Moffitt is a member of the board of trustees of Muhlenberg Hospital Center and the Lehigh Valley Health Network, Inc. He also serves on the board of directors of the Foundation for a Drug-Free Pennsylvania.
He and his wife, Joanne, are the parents of two adult children. They reside in Hanover Township, Northampton County.
