BETHLEHEM, Pa., May 3, 1996 -- The promotion of Dr. John M. Chilton as director of research for Bethlehem Steel Corporation was announced here today by Curtis H. Barnette, Bethlehem's chairman and chief executive officer. Dr. Chilton succeeds Dr. Malcom J. Roberts who was recently elected vice president, technology, and chief technology officer of Bethlehem.
A native of Rotherham, England, Dr. Chilton is advancing from the position of manager, hot rolled products, at Bethlehem's Homer Research Laboratories. He received his bachelor of science degree in 1962 and a doctoral degree in 1965, both in metallurgy, from the University of Leeds, England.
Before beginning his career with Bethlehem as a research engineer in 1973, he served in research capacities for U.S. Steel and Bell Laboratories.
Dr. Chilton worked in the physical metallurgy and product metallurgy areas before being promoted to supervisor, product metallurgy, in 1978. He was named supervisor, welding and fracture, in 1982, and manager, materials science, in 1984.
Professionally, Dr. Chilton is a member of the American Society for Metals, and the Metallurgical Society of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers.
