WASHINGTON, D.C., May 21, 1998 -- Curtis H. Barnette, chairman and chief executive officer of Bethlehem Steel Corporation and 1997 chairman of the American Iron and Steel Institute, was recognized during a luncheon today by the North American steel industry with its most prestigious honor, the Gary Memorial Medal.
The medal was established 64 years ago to perpetuate the contributions of one of the steel industry's most distinguished leaders, Judge Elbert H. Gary, who was a founder of AISI. The medal is bestowed in recognition of an especially distinguished career and extraordinary service to the steel industry.
William T. Hogan, S.J., director of the Industrial Economics Research Institute at Fordham University, Bronx, N.Y., presented the medal to Mr. Barnette at the AISI General Meeting in Toronto, Canada. Among a long list of accomplishments, Rev. Hogan highlighted Mr. Barnette's esteemed career in the steel industry serving in an advisory role to several Administrations, testifying frequently before Congressional Committees, and writing and speaking extensively on various corporate, litigation, international trade, corporate governance and related matters.
Mr. Barnette is a member of the President's Trade Advisory Committee (ACTPN), appointed by President Bush in 1989 and 1991 by President Clinton in 1994 and 1997. President Regan appointed him to the Council of the Administrative Conference of the United States in 1988 and Secretary Dole named him to the Coal Commission in 1990. As well as serving as AISI chairman in 1997 and currently as a director, Mr. Barnette is a past chairman and a director of the International Iron and Steel Institute. He is also a member of the Policy Committee of the Business Roundtable and of the Business Council.
Mr. Barnette was honored with the Gary Medal "for his recognized leadership and statesmanship on the vital public policy issues of his time; for his steadfast service to the nation as adviser to the highest levels of government, and for his deep commitment and wise counsel to the Institute and to the industry."
The American Iron and Steel Institute is a non-profit association of North American companies engaged in the iron and steel industry.
