BETHLEHEM, Pa., July 12, 1996 -- In response to a request from the Wall Street Journal for comment on the possible effects on American companies of a stronger dollar in relation to the yen, Curtis H. Barnette, chairman of Bethlehem Steel Corporation said:

"The recent trend toward a weaker yen compared to the dollar is of concern. The continued weakening of the yen has an adverse effect upon American manufacturers. American products become more expensive in foreign markets and imports less costly. This hinders our ability to export steel and our customers' ability to export their products including those containing our steel. This should be monitored very closely and may require the attention of our respective governments."
