BETHLEHEM, Pa., December 23, 1996 -- Three Lehigh Valley non-profit environmental organizations received grants on behalf of Bethlehem Steel Corporation employee teams that received Excellence in Environmental Achievement Awards.

Receiving $2,000 grants from the Bethlehem Steel Foundation on behalf of the award-winning employee teams at Bethlehem Steel's local operations were:

• Burnside Plantation, Bethlehem, for the Gertie Fox Memorial Fund to protect the Monocacy Creek. The grant was presented by the BethForge Coolant Fluid Team, which worked to change grinding coolant fluids to eliminate odors and reduce fluid changes.
• Mariton Wildlife Sanctuary and Wilderness Trust, Williams Township, for support of regional environmental programs. The grant was presented by Bethlehem Structural Products' BethFume Dust Team, which was honored for creating a system to ship about 80,000 tons of dust reclaimed from steelmaking operations to a cement producer.
• Hugh Moore Historical Park and Museums, Easton, for support of regional environmental programs. The grant was presented by the CENTEC Waste Minimization Team, which won an award for its efforts to reduce hazardous waste from operations.

Bethlehem Steel's annual Excellence in Environmental Achievement Awards recognize company facilities, teams and individuals who make significant contributions to support Bethlehem Steel's environmental policy and objectives. The awards program, now in its second year, annually honors employee teams from throughout the corporation and provides grants to environmental organizations selected by the winning employee teams.
