BETHLEHEM, Pa., December 18, 1996 -- In response to media inquiries concerning a settlement agreement between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Bethlehem, Pa., subsidiaries of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, the company said:
On December 17, Bethlehem Structural Products Corporation, BethForge and CENTEC entered into a settlement agreement with OSHA to ensure compliance with applicable safety and health standards at its respective operations.
Bethlehem Steel and the United Steelworkers of America cooperated fully with the Allentown office of OSHA as representatives of the agency conducted a comprehensive review of all ongoing operations at the site, including those of contractors at work in various portions of the property, as part of the agency's general schedule of workplace inspections.
Bethlehem and the USWA will work with OSHA to develop and complete appropriate corrective actions at its Bethlehem facilities.
The corporation has also reached a settlement with OSHA concerning a citation arising from a December 27, 1995 fatal accident at the combination rolling mill complex of Bethlehem Structural Products Corporation. Since this accident, Bethlehem has strengthened its training for employees who work with fuels and portable heaters.
"Bethlehem is committed to providing a safe and healthful workplace for its employees. This agreement satisfactorily resolves various safety and health issues arising from the OSHA investigation and furthers our efforts to promote safety as a fundamental value shared by each employee that will not be compromised," said Gregory F. Paolini, president of the three Bethlehem, Pa., subsidiaries.
