Bill McGuire Appointed Director, Corporate Raw Materials.

BETHLEHEM, Pa., August 30, 2000 -- William J. McGuire has been appointed director, corporate raw materials, in the purchasing and transportation department of Bethlehem Steel Corporation.

Mr. McGuire is advancing from his current position of strategic sourcing manager. In his new assignment, he will manage all corporate raw material sourcing efforts.

A native of Cresson, Pa., Mr. McGuire received a bachelor of science degree in extractive metallurgy in 1976 from The Pennsylvania State University. Following graduation, he began his Bethlehem Steel career at the Cambria, Pa., coal mining operations. He was transferred to the corporate headquarters in 1979 as an assistant preparation engineer in the areas of coal processing and quality control and then returned to Cambria in 1983 as assistant to the superintendent.

In 1987 Mr. McGuire was promoted to superintendent of the Cambria Slope Preparation Plant, a position he held until the closure of this facility in 1994. He then joined the purchasing department's raw materials sourcing team in the corporate headquarters, involved in the purchase of various materials as well as the sale of coal and coke.

Within Bethlehem Steel, Mr. McGuire received a Gold Award in 1989 for outstanding individual contribution and has been a member or team leader of four cross functional teams that have received awards for improvements in quality, service, productivity and cost reduction.

Professionally, Mr. McGuire is a member of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Iron and Steel Society, Association of Iron and Steel Engineers, Mining Electro-Mechanical Maintenance Association and the Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association. He is also a member of the National Association of Purchasing Managers.

A resident of Bushkill Township, Mr. McGuire has coached youth baseball, basketball and soccer programs. He and his wife, Marsha, are the parents of three teenaged sons.
