The election of Dr. Malcolm J. Roberts as vice president, technology, and chief technology officer, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, and Robert A. Rudzki as vice president, purchasing and transportation, and chief procurement officer, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, effective May 1, was announced today by Curtis H. Barnette, Bethlehem's chairman.

BETHLEHEM, Pa., April 30, 1996 -- The election of Dr. Malcolm J. Roberts as vice president, technology, and chief technology officer, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, and Robert A. Rudzki as vice president, purchasing and transportation, and chief procurement officer, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, effective May 1, was announced today by Curtis H. Barnette, Bethlehem's chairman.

Dr. Roberts, who is advancing from director of research, succeeds Dr. Walter N. Bargeron as Bethlehem's chief technology officer. Dr. Bargeron was recently elected president of Bethlehem's Burns Harbor Division. Mr. Rudzki is advancing from general manager, purchasing and transportation. Both Mr. Rudzki and Dr. Roberts will report to Roger P. Penny, Bethlehem's president and chief operating officer.

Dr. Malcolm J. Roberts

A native of Cheshire, England, Dr. Roberts holds a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering and a doctorate in metallurgical engineering, both from the University of Liverpool. He joined Bethlehem Steel as a research engineer in 1967 and was promoted to supervisor of product metallurgy in 1971 and to section manager in 1979. In 1982, he was named research manager, construction steels and manufactured products, and two years later was named associate director of research. He was appointed director of research in 1985. Dr. Roberts is a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute, the Iron and Steel Society, the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers, and the Industrial Research Institute.

Robert A. Rudzki

Mr. Rudzki was born in West Bromwich, England. He graduated from Lehigh University, summa cum laude, with a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering and from The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School with a master of business administration degree. He joined Bethlehem Steel in 1977 as a member of the management training program and was assigned to the finance department's credit division. He was promoted to senior credit assistant in 1979 and to administrative manager in 1980.

He was named director of business development in 1982. In 1986, he was promoted to manager of banking and in 1988 was elected assistant treasurer. Mr. Rudzki was named assistant controller in the accounting department in 1993 and was promoted to general manager, purchasing and transportation, in 1994.

He is past president of the Treasury Management Association of Central Pennsylvania and has served on the Pennsylvania State Treasurer's advisory committee on electronic funds transfer. Mr. Rudzki is a member of the National Association of Purchasing Managers, the Treasury Management Association and the American Iron and Steel Institute.
