BETHLEHEM, Pa., April 29, 1996 -- Bethlehem Steel Corporation has been selected by General Motors as a 1995 Supplier of the Year -- the only steel producing company in the world to be so honored.
The awards were presented at an international event in Vienna, Austria: "Tribute '96 -- The Art of Perfection." Recipients of the award were presented with a sculpture, "Testimony to Excellence," to acknowledge those who produce the materials that go into GM products.
Commenting on the Supplier of the Year award, Harold R. Kutner, General Motors vice president for Worldwide Purchasing, said: "The winners are truly the best of the best. To be singled out for this award says to the whole world you are truly an outstanding performer. You are an industry leader."
Supplier of the Year Awards at the international level were first made by GM in 1992. Suppliers must meet tough criteria to win a Supplier of the Year award -- quality, service and price. Suppliers are recommended by GM teams, reviewed and approved by GM personnel worldwide, and have exceeded expectations of GM buyers, engineers and plants.
General Motors purchases goods and services from more than 30,000 suppliers around the world, and only 158 of these suppliers from 25 countries were selected as a 1995 Supplier of the Year. Bethlehem Steel supplies high-quality steel used in General Motors cars, vans, pickups and sport-utility vehicles.
In accepting the award in Vienna, Hank Barnette, Bethlehem's chairman, said: "On behalf of our employees, Bethlehem Steel is deeply honored to be a Supplier of the Year to General Motors. Our Vision for Bethlehem is to be the Premier Steel Company, and our primary objective is to serve our customers. This award recognizes significant progress. We will have follow-up events at Burns Harbor and in Bethlehem to further recognize this achievement."
