"Bethlehem Steel and the United Steelworkers of America have agreed to begin local issue discussions immediately at Bethlehem's business units that are covered by the current labor agreement that expires August 1, 1999. Local issue discussions will continue, if not concluded, when the main table discussions begin in Pittsburgh on Monday, May 10. Chief negotiators and chairman of the bargaining committee for the parties are, for management, Jack Kluttz, vice president, union relations, Bethlehem Steel, and, for labor, Tom Conway, secretary of the basic steel industry conference, USWA International, Pittsburgh.
"We hope to reach an early agreement that will help ensure regular, ongoing operations for Bethlehem's business units and their customers as well as steady employment for Bethlehem's workforce. We share a common interest in assuring our customers that they will have the same level of high-quality service provided by Bethlehem and its employees. We also believe that the efforts to reach an early agreement are supportive of the efforts of Bethlehem and the USWA through the Stand Up for Steel campaign to increase public awareness of the serious injury being caused to the domestic steel industry and its employees by the unprecedented levels of unfairly traded foreign steel."
