SPARROWS POINT, Md., Nov. 19, 1996 -- In response to Wayne Laufert, Dundalk Eagle, regarding a press release issued by a vendor, 7-7 Inc., Wooster, Ohio, about the demolition of coke oven batteries at Bethlehem's Sparows Point Division, the company said:
"The Sparrows Point Division has engaged 7-7 Inc. to remove Nos. 11 and 12 batteries as part of a continuing process to improve and streamline the plant.
"Sparrows Point's purchasing department has a demolition/steel scrap recycling program in which most of the steel in the facilities is recycled in the division's steelmaking furnaces.
"More; than a dozen large facilities have been removed at Sparrows Point since the late 1980Us, including several blast furnaces, the No. 1 open hearth shop and six older coke oven batteries. Portions of the No. 3 open hearth shop are now being demolished."
