BETHLEHEM, Pa., January 31, 1996 -- Curtis H. Barnette, chairman of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, announced today the election of Shirley D. Peterson as a director of Bethlehem Steel Corporation.

Mrs. Peterson is President of Hood College in Frederick, Maryland. She is a Trustee of Kemper Mutual Funds, a Trustee of Bryn Mawr College, and a member of the National Commission on Economic Growth and Tax Reform. She was the Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, and an Assistant Attorney General in the Department of Justice.

Mr. Barnette said: "Mrs. Peterson has served with distinction in public service, and in the private sector. As Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, she was chief executive officer of one of the largest agencies in the federal government. Her present responsibilities are now in the field of education as the President of Hood College. With her broad knowledge, experience and skills in management, education and public policy she will be an important addition to our Board of Directors, and will effectively represent the interests of our stockholders."
