BETHLEHEM, Pa., January 5, 1996 -- Bethlehem Steel Corporation said today that the base price for carbon and high-strength low-alloy sheared plate will be increased by $20 per ton, and the composite price for strip mill plates will be increased by $15 per ton, effective with shipments March 31, 1996.

Bethlehem also said today that the base prices for sheet products will be increased $15 per ton for hot rolled sheet and $20 per ton for cold rolled sheet and coated sheets, effective with new orders placed for shipment February 4, 1996, and later, and for all orders scheduled for shipment March 31, 1996, and later.

Bethlehem said: "In making these pricing decisions, we have balanced the continuing need to rebuild our financial strength and to achieve sustained profitability with the ongoing needs of our customers and our long-term customer relationships.

"Increased prices for steel are economically justified and will be implemented. When adjusted for inflation, flat rolled steel prices today are about 13 percent below where they were in the late 1980s.

"This price action will result in an approximate 3 percent improvement in prices. Our pricing decision has considered the current demand for steel sheet and plate products and the impact of competitive materials, resulting in the most equitable decision for all interested parties.
