Joseph F. Emig, president of the Burns Harbor Division of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, has decided to retire after 37 years of service, effective June 30, and Dr. Walter N. Bargeron, president of Bethlehem's Services Division and chief technology officer, has been elected to succeed him, effective July 1, it was announced today by Curtis H. Barnette, Bethlehem's chairman.

BETHLEHEM, Pa., April 29, 1996 -- Joseph F. Emig, president of the Burns Harbor Division of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, has decided to retire after 37 years of service, effective June 30, and Dr. Walter N. Bargeron, president of Bethlehem's Services Division and chief technology officer, has been elected to succeed him, effective July 1, it was announced today by Curtis H. Barnette, Bethlehem's chairman.
In making the announcement, Mr. Barnette said: "For 37 years, Joe Emig has served Bethlehem Steel with great distinction, especially during his past decade as head of Burns Harbor, Bethlehem's preeminent steelmaking facility. We are confident that Walt Bargeron, with his outstanding technological background and Burns Harbor experience, will continue to advance this Division's competitive position."

Mr. Emig was named general manager of the Burns Harbor plant in 1987, vice president and general manager in 1988, and president of the Burns Harbor Division when it became a separate business unit in 1993.
A native of Philadelphia, Mr. Emig received a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering from Lafayette College. He joined Bethlehem in 1959 as a member of the management training program and was assigned to the metallurgical department of the company's Steelton, Pa., plant. He was transferred to Burns Harbor in 1966 as a metallurgical service engineer and promoted to positions of increasing responsibility there. He was appointed chief metallurgist in 1980, manager, technical services in 1982, and senior manager in 1985.
Mr. Emig serves on the Indiana Steel Industry Advisory Commission and chairs its Public Affairs Committee. He is also a director of the Indiana Manufacturers Association and the Northwest Indiana Forum. He is a member of the Metallurgical Society of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers and of the American Iron and Steel Institute.
Dr. Walter N. Bargeron
Dr. Bargeron was born in Westfield, Mass., and received a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a doctorate in metallurgical engineering from the University of Michigan.
He joined the Homer Research Laboratories of Bethlehem Steel in 1969, and was assigned to the company's former Lackawanna, N.Y., steel plant, where he was involved in research on ironmaking processes. Subsequently he served as a supervising engineer in the blast furnace department and as supervisor of several metallurgical divisions. In 1980, he was named supervisor, basic facilities, in the technology department at Lackawanna.
Dr. Bargeron was transferred to Burns Harbor in 1983 as senior supervisor, technology department, and was promoted to chief metallurgist there the following year. He was appointed manager of quality assurance and process technology in 1985. In 1987, he was named a senior manager at Burns Harbor with responsibilities relating to product quality, process technology, and cold rolled and coated sheet operations.
Dr. Bargeron was elected vice president, technology and quality assurance, for Bethlehem Steel in 1991. In 1993, he was named president of the corporation's new Services Division with responsibility for Homer Research Laboratories, quality assurance, information technology, facilities engineering, purchasing, transportation, claims, billing and accounts receivable.
