Roger P. Penny A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Mr. Penny holds a bachelor of science in administrative engineering from Union College. He joined Bethlehem in 1958 as a member of the corporations management training program and was assigned to the Lackawanna, N.Y., plant. He was advanced to assistant superintendent of that plants primary mills department and subsequently assigned to the slabbing mill, structural mills, and bloom, billet and rail department. He was appointed superintendent of Lackawannas environmental quality control department in 1976 and superintendent of the primary mills in 1977. Early 1982, he was appointed superintendent of the hot-rolled and cold-rolled products department and later that year was promoted to senior manager of the plant. He was named general manager of the Burns Harbor, Ind., plant in 1983. In 1986, he served as vice chairman of the Bethlehem Negotiating Committee during contract negotiations with the United Steelworkers of America. Mr. Penny was elected senior vice president, steel operations, in March 1987 and elected to the Board of Directors in June 1991. Effective November 1, 1992, he was elected president and chief operating officer. In August of 1999, Mr. Penny was appointed vice chairman. He is responsible for assisting the chairman in the development of strategic initiatives and overseeing Bethlehems joint ventures, major capital projects, technology and engineering. Mr. Penny is a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute and a member of its Committee on Manufacturing. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Manufacturers. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Keep America Beautiful, Inc., and is a member of the Board of Trustees, St. Lukes Hospital.
