Carl W. Johnson A native of Springfield, Mass., Mr. Johnson earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts. He joined Bethlehem Steel in 1963 as a member of that years management training program and was assigned to the Lackawanna, N.Y., plant. Initially employed in the mechanical department of the plants hot strip mill, he advanced to master mechanic in that operation before being named assistant superintendent of the plants mechanical department in 1976. In 1982, he became assistant superintendent of the slab mill/hot strip mill/cold mill, and three years later was promoted to superintendent of the galvanized products division at Lackawanna. He was transferred to Sparrows Point in 1988 as manager, maintenance and technical services and, in 1991, was named senior manager at Bethlehems Burns Harbor, Ind., plant. Mr. Johnson returned to Sparrows Point one year later when he was promoted to vice president and general manager of the plant. In 1993, when the corporation formed separate business units, he was named vice president of operations for the Sparrows Point Division.
