External Awards and Recognitions
BethForge Inc. received a 1996 Safety Award from the Forging Industry
Association for achieving incidence and severity rates lower than the average of companies
in its industry size group. This is the second consecutive year that BethForge has
received the award.
Burns Harbor Division received an environmental stewardship award from
the Porter County, Ind., Solid Waste Management District Board in appreciation for
Bethlehems contribution to the success of the districts leaf composting
program. Bethlehem provided the land for the composting site for the past three years.
Burns Harbor Division was among several businesses, government units and
organizations that received special recognition as a member of the Partners for Clean Air
model program in Indiana. Recognition was given by the Indiana Department of Environmental
Management. Partners for Clean Air is a program that encourages various groups to work
together to find solutions to air pollution in northwest Indiana.
Burns Harbor Division was cited in Northwest Indiana
magazine as one of three industries whose environmental management policies allow them to
coexist with a nearby wildlife refuge. Burns Harbor, located on Lake Michigan, is the only
integrated steel plant that is bordered on two sides by Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
Pennsylvania Steel Technologies, Inc. was recognized as a 1996 winner of
the Pennsylvania Governors Award for Environmental Excellence in the technology
innovation category. The award was given for developing and implementing SUPER DETOX�,
which chemically stabilizes metals such as zinc, lead and others in electric arc furnace
dust to render it nontoxic.
Philadelphia, Bethlehem and New England Railroad, one of Bethlehems
subsidiary railroads, was presented with a Silver Safety Award by the E. H. Harriman
Memorial Awards Institute, Washington, D.C., for its outstanding safety performance in
1995. PB&NE has won gold, silver or bronze medals in 16 of the past 28 years.
Sparrows Point Division received a Return on Environment Partnership
Award from BetzDearborn, Inc., for significantly reducing waste disposal at its cold sheet
mill department. The chrome treatment process at the hot-dipped galvanized coating lines
was changed from a bath application to a spray system, resulting in the elimination of 275
tons of chrome waste per year and a cost savings of more than $500,000.
Bethlehem Steel received a Waste Wi$e Award from the Environmental
Protection Agency for the comprehensive waste management program at its corporate offices.
The award recognized Bethlehems use of electronic data exchange and two-sided
copying to reduce office paper consumption by more than 20 tons over the previous year and
the collection of 200 tons of recycled paper, cardboard, glass and aluminum.
Bethlehem Steel was among several companies recognized by the
Environmental Protection Agency in 1996 for achieving its 33/50 Program emissions
reduction goals. Bethlehems actions to reduce benzene emissions at its coke oven
operations were included in a compendium of success stories that EPA assembled to show
other companies how to successfully prevent pollution.
Bethlehem Steel was recognized by Junior Girl Scout Troop #344,
Coopersburg, Pa., with an environmental award for helping the troop with its environmental
project. The company provided information and publications on its environmental
performance and activities for the past several years.
