Simply stated, EDI is the transmission, computer-to-computer, of common
business transactions between two companies. Transactions such as purchase orders,
material releases, shipping notices and payment remittance are communicated
electronically. Transmission of information of this type has been around, in one form or
another, for a good many years. What makes Bethlehem EDI and X12 standards important is
that these systems provide a common denominator of format language. Companies
are now able to talk among themselves and to others, rather than just to themselves. Bethlehem was a pioneer in the development of the X12 standards. With the development and endorsement of the X12 formats, Bethlehem's EDI partners enjoy the advantage of a program that can be applied to many disciplines, rather than traditional, stand-alone, single product line/service. Once a customer becomes a partner with Bethlehem in using EDI for various transactions, the same format can be applied to products and services with other suppliers/customers of everything from raw materials to finished goods. All at compounding savings of time and money. |
