Our Customers:
Committing ourselves to superior service
Just like a
reliable lighthouse leads the way to a safe harbor, Sparrows Point is committed to leading
the way among steel producers in superior service to its customers. With skilled employees
and one of the finest steel manufacturing facilities in the world today, Sparrows Point
ships 3.6 million tons of high-quality products annually.
Our customers around the globe convert this most versatile of materials
into metal buildings, roofing, food containers, and a host of useful products serving
humankind. Demanding applications and requirements of customers continually challenge our
employees and our equipment. We would have it no other way.
After experiencing enormous change in all aspects of our business, we
now have a strong vision of our future that synchronizes well with that of our customers.
We believe we know our customers better than anyone else in our industry does,
understanding and anticipating their needs, allowing us to work in tandem toward success.
It is this commitment to customers that distinguishes Sparrows Point in the marketplace.
In striving continually for superb quality, our employees use the
winning combination of expertise handed down over more than 100 years and the latest
technological advancements in the art of steelmaking. With a top notch quality management
system in place, Sparrows Point became the nation's first integrated steel manufacturer to
be awarded ISO 9002 certification, a benefit to all of our customers, particularly those
who do business overseas. Improvements in quality and service have gained the recognition
of many customers who have presented us with supplier awards.
Bethlehem's investments illustrate a concentration on steel and the
determination to remain in the forefront of the industry. Bethlehem Steel has streamlined,
modernized and installed new facilities at Sparrows Point, investing more than
$1.4-billion in recent years.
These improvements include the modernization of steelmaking facilities,
the installation of a two-strand continuous slab caster, the $200-million modernization of
the hot strip mill, which supplies our other mills with sheet steel, and the $140-million
installation of a fourth hot-dip coating line. Our Double G Coatings joint venture near
Jackson, Miss., serving the growing light construction market in the South-Central states,
is receiving cold-rolled product from the division.
Sparrows Point's customers have been investing, too. Automation, speed
and precision are rising to astonishing heights. Their sophisticated and inventive
machinery tests our steel and employees.
Our employees are up to the challenges. They are on a roll, producing
the best steel ever. With this momentum, and with our customers' ever-changing needs in
mind, we know that the products and services of Sparrows Point will be even better in the
years ahead.
