| The reduced sulfur levels of Fineline� steels also increase the steels’ notch toughness. Fineline
plates subjected to Charpy V-notch impact testing showed an increase in longitudinal,
transverse and through-thickness toughness value when compared to conventionally-melted
plate steels. Energy absorption ranges, based on Bethlehem's testing are displayed in
Figure 4. Fracture mechanics testing further emphasizes the improvements realized in Fineline steels, as Figure 5 shows. |

Fineline-processed armor plate steels, with improved toughness and resistance to spalling, have been used in many military applications, including the protective armor side plates of the U.S. Army’s Abrams M1-A1 main battle tank. | ||
