Bethlehem, Pa., December 1, 1995 BethForge Inc. is now using customized steels produced by Pennsylvania Steel Technologies in Steelton, Pa., for all of its forged products. Both businesses are wholly owned subsidiaries of Bethlehem Steel Corporation.
BethForge is now using high-quality steel produced in PST's new 150-ton DC electric arc furnace. Further processing, such as ladle refining, ladle degassing and vacuum stream degassing, are also performed at PST for BethForge's specialized forging customers.
Ingots up to 130 inches in diameter and weighing up to 300 tons are transported to BethForge in insulated rail cars to provide just-in-time delivery for forging at BethForge's 10,000-ton press. The rail cars keep temperature heat loss to about 150° F during the 90-mile trip from PST. BethForge began receiving ingots from PST this spring as the new electric furnace shop increased production.
"The specialized metallurgical services available to our customers through the facilities at PST will help us enter new markets and improve our already excellent reputation for quality," said Gregory F. Paolini, president of BethForge.
BethForge had previously produced steel in its electric furnace meltshop, which ceased operations on November 30. The shop had four furnaces that began making steel in about 1940, and employed about 50 people. The decision to improve the quality of ingots forged by BethForge by using PST's new steelmaking facilities was announced in the fall of 1993.
Affected represented employees are eligible to use the outplacement services established by the United Steelworkers of America for employees of Bethlehem Structural Products Corporation, which also ended steelmaking operations this month.
